Clan of Xymox

Formed in Amsterdam in 1984, Clan of Xymox became one of the mainstays of the 4AD label. Along with label mates such as Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance the Clan’s dark electro-gothic approach to music quickly became the benchmark by which all other bands to follow were judged.

In its long and storied history, Clan Of Xymox has developed a signature dark electro-gothic sound that has made the act adored around the world. With the new album, Matters of Mind, Body and Soul, the band explores its signature, melancholic sound, as evidenced by standout tracks such as “I Close My Eyes” and “I’ll Let You Go.”

Paul Robb

Paul Robb is a founding member of Information Society, a musical collective which has been recording and performing for over twenty-five years. After emerging from the Minneapolis underground in the mid-1980s, the group stormed onto the national scene with their international cult classic “Running,” one of the most influential electro/freestyle tracks of all time.

Led by founder/producer Paul Robb, the group went on to release numerous Top 40 hits, notably the No. 1 smash “What’s on Your Mind (Pure Energy),” as well as “Walking Away,” “Think,” and “Peace and Love, Inc.”. Numerous national and international tours followed; outside the United States, the group is especially popular in Scandinavia, Spain, Japan, and South America.

After departing Tommy Boy/Reprise Records in the mid-90s, the group returned to its electro-industrial roots on several independent releases. Re-releases of both “Running” and “What’s on Your Mind” have reached No. 1 on the Billboard Dance/Club chart in recent years.

ACTORS

The term “post-punk”, like many terms with a similar prefix, is firmly planted in a time in history, and signifies an added precision and experimentation to a thrilling genre that has echoed forward in both style and attitude. The Jason Corbett-led outfit ACTORS are standing on the shoulders of titans with their brand of the style, and could almost be referred to as “post-post-punk”. In a period where we narrowcast rather than broadcast so fans and new music-seekers can firmly plant themselves in a niche, Corbett takes swings at creating sounds and production techniques that one would not usually find in a starter package of cliché plugins and samples. Backed by a stoic yet playful backing band, the frontman shows an enthusiasm while performing and recording that often isn’t seen or heard in his preferred genre. Often seen at festivals as one of the only acts with live instrumentation, the velocity created by having a live group of musicians brings back the listener to a time where players actually performed alongside one another in the studio, rather than being comped or programmed. Those who choose not to embrace and study history are often lazy repeaters, but an act like this knows where to cherry pluck from the past and where to build upon it.

The Foreign Resort

The Foreign Resort – a mix of dark new wave and explosive post-punk.
Hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark, the band combines the shadowy mysticism of The Cure’s Pornography era with a driving production aesthetic akin to LCD Soundsystem. Intricate reverb-enveloped guitar lines glide over Steffan Petersen’s motorik bass and Morten Hansen’s powerful drumming, all while Mikkel Borbjerg Jakobsen’s taut and sincere vocal delivery demands your attention.

The Foreign Resort have toured relentlessly, addicted to the allure of America’s lost highways, sharing bills with bands like Cold Cave, DIIV, The Soft Moon, She Past Away, The KVB, Slowdive, Minor Victories, Ash Code and many more. Since 2010, the band has been rigorous in playing more than 420 shows across North America and Europe with performances at several festivals incl. SXSW, Iceland Airwaves, Wave Gotik Treffen, Canadian Music Week, POP Montreal and Nocturnal Culture Night. The trio will continue playing shows at venues and festivals throughout 2018 while preparing their next full length release on Artoffact Records in 2019, preceded by their latest single “She is Lost“.

Panic Priest

Death. Sex. Doomed Romance. These three simple phrases define the sound and thematic presence of Panic Priest. The musical project of singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Jack Armondo (of “dark pop” duo My Gold Mask), Panic Priest is centered around Armondoʼs deep, crooning vocals while weaving together electronic beats, dreamy guitars and synths. Panic Priest creates midnight melodies that wonʼt soon leave your memory as dawn breaks.

Panic Priestʼs debut and self-titled illustration to the world saw itʼs release in May of 2018 under Negative Gain Productions and was mixed and recorded in part by Adam Stillson of the electronic/ shoegaze project New Canyons. Armondo crosses boundaries as he offers a host of technical skill by blending the likes of darkwave, post-punk, and synthpop into one unique melting pot. The album also features guest contributions from members of such acts as Wingtips, NITE, and Airiel.

“Itʼs a solid LP built on a foundation of well presented songs.”
– I Die:You Die

“…fans of early Tears for Fears and Peter Murphy’s Deep should love its moody
grooves, dark romanticism, and chilly synths.”
– Chicago Reader

“…a sound that while reminiscent of The Mission, inexplicably transcends genre with it’s opulent fervor.”

Summer 2015 Noteworthy Gigs

There are a bunch of fantastic shows coming to the Twin Cities over the next few months. We like to keep you informed, so here are the details of a few that caught our eye and a little bit about why these are going to be killer events. We hope to see you there!

The Rope, Thunderbolt Pagoda, Claps, Gloss

June 10
7th St. Entry
8 pm / 18+ / $5
Details / Facebook Event / Tickets

Many of you already know The Rope, especially after their amazing performance at this year’s Goth Prom. For those of you who have yet to experience The Rope, they are a dark synth rock band influenced heavily by the post-punk sounds of the late 70s. They’re known around town for their engaging performances, passionate lyrics, and dark yet danceable music. This is a very strong, well architected lineup of Minneapolis talent. Rounding out the bill are Thunderbolt Pagoda (heavy, proggy, space-rock), Claps (minimal synth pop), and Gloss (dream pop, shoegaze). Their sounds are diverse, but complement each other well.

En Esch (Slick Idiot, ex-KMFDM), Go Fight (Jim Marcus, ex-Die Warzau), Ghostfeeder

June 23
Amsterdam
9 pm / 21+ / $12 adv / $15 door
Details / Facebook Event / Tickets

Wax Trax fans, do not miss this show! En Esch of KMFDM and Slick Idiot is touring in support of his brand new album, Spank. Check out this great review from Intravenous Magazine:

Songs such as ‘Give The People What They Want’, ‘Do Me’, ‘We Love To Hate’, ‘No Guts No Glory’, ‘Ich Bin Ein Berliner’, ‘Spaenk’ and ‘This Party Ain’t Over’ cover everything from dance-friendly electro-industrial, through to hard and heavy NDH. He even throws in a curve ball with the annoyingly addictive and demented ‘I Hop’. The album presents a full cross-section of En Esch’s strongest song-writing styles and some memorable collaborations with the likes of Guenter Schulz, Erica Dilanjian, MMTM.

En Esch brings with him Chicago’s Go Fight (electroscuzz featuring Jim Marcus of Die Warzau).

Go Fight were last here in 2012 and since then, they’ve released two full length albums and numerous singles. Their brand new sophomore release, Napalm Baby, was released in April and has been receiving rave reviews:

However, amongst all these different themes and motifs comes the awesome music that this band has managed to perfect in a short span of time. They describe themselves as “Electroscuzz”, which is pretty much a self-made genre. But, after giving a listen to this clear cut production, I can only describe that as a mixture of industrial, funk, electro, and a little bit of everything else in between the smaller lines. Expect a lot of upbeat experimentation and naughty nonsense that somehow manages to work very, very well.  (Brutal Resonance)

Freezepop, Dance Assault, The Electric Witch, Duck Duck Punch

July 18
Nether Bar at Mill City Nights
8:30 pm 18+ / $13 adv / $15 door (ticket link coming soon!)
Facebook Event
Kilted Farmer Koncerts show

It’s been over four years since Freezepop traveled to the Twin Cities. We’re big fans of synth pop and are very much looking forward to having them back! Freezepop shows are always super high energy and full of geeky fun. Joining them are up and comers Dance Assault, who’s funky electronic pop is sure to get you moving,  The Electric Witch (retro sci-fi inspired synth pop), and Duck Duck Punch. KFAI’s DJ SLT will keep you entertained between bands.

KMFDM, Chant, Inertia

August 15
Mill City Nights
8 pm / 18+ / $22
Details / Facebook Event / Tickets
Kilted Farmer Koncerts show

KMFDM need no introduction, so we’d like to spend a little time introducing you to the fantastic tour support – Chant and Inertia. Chant is a tribal-infused apocalyptic drum project that has developed a reputation for blistering stage performances while touring extensively with KMFDM, Lords of Acid, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, and Angelspit. London’s Inertia (electro-industrial-rock-dark pop, Metropolis Records) are touring in support of their brand new album, Existential, out this month. Make sure you arrive early to catch Chant and Inertia!

Haujobb, Dissociate, Echo Signal

August 24
Nether Bar at Mill City Nights
18+ / $15 adv / $20 door (ticket link and full details coming soon!)
Kilted Farmer Koncerts show

The consensus on Haujobb’s opening set at the Skinny Puppy / Front Line Assembly show in December was that it was way too short. Haujobb were the highlight of the evening for many, and we’re pleased to bring them back to Mill City Nights in the Nether Bar for a headlining performance. Locals Dissociate (IDM / noise) and Echo Signal (post punk) will kick things off. And after the show, be sure to head over to Hard Mondays at The Saloon for more post-concert fun!
