KANGA

Heavy Pop. Industrial but not.

KANGA is a solo project of a Los Angeles based composer, artist, and music programmer who has worked on films that include Nightmare, The Devils Carnival II, Insidious III, and The Conjuring II. KANGA wields the power of objectification. Fetish, sexuality, angst, and melancholy take shape, bringing the dark miracle of life to song. Mechanization & melody are made from fragments of KANGA’s own flesh and soul to become her objects of creation.

In 2019, KANGA self-released EP Eternal Daughter and toured the UK with Gary Numan, to rave reviews like this one:

“Tonight the lighting was set so that we could witness this solitary figure throwing moves across the stage like a seductive industrial/EBM version of Lara Croft but without actually making out the person’s facial features. The music was in keeping with the current state of play in the Numan camp and thus was well received and the merch stall was busy as a result of this after the gig. If you are a fan of dark fetishistic keyboard sounds with often heavy body blowing notes with sweetly sounding Grimes style lyrical contact atop, then KANGA is for you!” -Brighton & Hove News

Wax Lead

Brewing ‘post-punk, ballads, soundscapes, and silence since 2017

With a self-released debut 4-tracker, entitled “Husband, Lord, & Master”, at the very end of last year [2018] under their belt, the quartet play a poignant, dense and vibrant, bordering on goth, noir-ish post-punk leaning on evocative layers of twangy guitars, hypnotic somber bass lines, enriched by heartfelt and moving passionate vocalizations, influenced by artists like the Cranes, Nick Cave, Einstürzende Neubauten, and Madrugada.

Rumbling and seething bleak bassline, backed by tight drums, ominously pulses unremittingly throughout, penetrated by jittery piercing guitar chords that supremely whine, rip, radiate and collide, achingly echoing murky, angry, equally fragile and powerful, female vocals weighted by deep hopeless fear and distress as a woman rebukes about greed, vanity, and indifference in the dystopian land of mass consumerism.

Shadowy and introspective, both compelling and subtly disturbing, “Honey on the Moon” is pervaded by a profound sense of reckless endangerment that speaks straight to the heart.

The Trapezoids

Minimal new wave. The Trapezoids join the bill for an extremely rare live performance.

The Trapezoids formed in the back of a school bus in Feb. 1981 by 13 year olds Nils Johnson and Bradley Beving. Born out of a mutual infatuation with DEVO, Kraftwerk, and Gary Numan, grand ideas were hatched and plans were made.

After a week or so of talking about The Trapezoids, and “writing” 2 songs (Yellow Meat and Free Milk) the idea was abandoned due to the severe lack of synthesizers.

In 1982 Bradley got involved with the punk/hardcore scene in Minneapolis, changed his name to Ollie Stench and went off in a completely different musical direction, but never abandoned his love of analog synthesizers and New Wave music.

After 25+ years of making other musics and collecting more influences Ollie has decided to revisit the Trapezoids project and see what kind of entertainment he can come up with.

Whether that entertainment is for his enjoyment or yours has yet to be determined.

Clan of Xymox

Formed in Amsterdam in 1984, Clan of Xymox became one of the mainstays of the 4AD label. Along with label mates such as Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance the Clan’s dark electro-gothic approach to music quickly became the benchmark by which all other bands to follow were judged.

In its long and storied history, Clan Of Xymox has developed a signature dark electro-gothic sound that has made the act adored around the world. With the new album, Matters of Mind, Body and Soul, the band explores its signature, melancholic sound, as evidenced by standout tracks such as “I Close My Eyes” and “I’ll Let You Go.”

Paul Robb

Paul Robb is a founding member of Information Society, a musical collective which has been recording and performing for over twenty-five years. After emerging from the Minneapolis underground in the mid-1980s, the group stormed onto the national scene with their international cult classic “Running,” one of the most influential electro/freestyle tracks of all time.

Led by founder/producer Paul Robb, the group went on to release numerous Top 40 hits, notably the No. 1 smash “What’s on Your Mind (Pure Energy),” as well as “Walking Away,” “Think,” and “Peace and Love, Inc.”. Numerous national and international tours followed; outside the United States, the group is especially popular in Scandinavia, Spain, Japan, and South America.

After departing Tommy Boy/Reprise Records in the mid-90s, the group returned to its electro-industrial roots on several independent releases. Re-releases of both “Running” and “What’s on Your Mind” have reached No. 1 on the Billboard Dance/Club chart in recent years.

ACTORS

The term “post-punk”, like many terms with a similar prefix, is firmly planted in a time in history, and signifies an added precision and experimentation to a thrilling genre that has echoed forward in both style and attitude. The Jason Corbett-led outfit ACTORS are standing on the shoulders of titans with their brand of the style, and could almost be referred to as “post-post-punk”. In a period where we narrowcast rather than broadcast so fans and new music-seekers can firmly plant themselves in a niche, Corbett takes swings at creating sounds and production techniques that one would not usually find in a starter package of cliché plugins and samples. Backed by a stoic yet playful backing band, the frontman shows an enthusiasm while performing and recording that often isn’t seen or heard in his preferred genre. Often seen at festivals as one of the only acts with live instrumentation, the velocity created by having a live group of musicians brings back the listener to a time where players actually performed alongside one another in the studio, rather than being comped or programmed. Those who choose not to embrace and study history are often lazy repeaters, but an act like this knows where to cherry pluck from the past and where to build upon it.

The Foreign Resort

The Foreign Resort – a mix of dark new wave and explosive post-punk.
Hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark, the band combines the shadowy mysticism of The Cure’s Pornography era with a driving production aesthetic akin to LCD Soundsystem. Intricate reverb-enveloped guitar lines glide over Steffan Petersen’s motorik bass and Morten Hansen’s powerful drumming, all while Mikkel Borbjerg Jakobsen’s taut and sincere vocal delivery demands your attention.

The Foreign Resort have toured relentlessly, addicted to the allure of America’s lost highways, sharing bills with bands like Cold Cave, DIIV, The Soft Moon, She Past Away, The KVB, Slowdive, Minor Victories, Ash Code and many more. Since 2010, the band has been rigorous in playing more than 420 shows across North America and Europe with performances at several festivals incl. SXSW, Iceland Airwaves, Wave Gotik Treffen, Canadian Music Week, POP Montreal and Nocturnal Culture Night. The trio will continue playing shows at venues and festivals throughout 2018 while preparing their next full length release on Artoffact Records in 2019, preceded by their latest single “She is Lost“.

Panic Priest

Death. Sex. Doomed Romance. These three simple phrases define the sound and thematic presence of Panic Priest. The musical project of singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Jack Armondo (of “dark pop” duo My Gold Mask), Panic Priest is centered around Armondoʼs deep, crooning vocals while weaving together electronic beats, dreamy guitars and synths. Panic Priest creates midnight melodies that wonʼt soon leave your memory as dawn breaks.

Panic Priestʼs debut and self-titled illustration to the world saw itʼs release in May of 2018 under Negative Gain Productions and was mixed and recorded in part by Adam Stillson of the electronic/ shoegaze project New Canyons. Armondo crosses boundaries as he offers a host of technical skill by blending the likes of darkwave, post-punk, and synthpop into one unique melting pot. The album also features guest contributions from members of such acts as Wingtips, NITE, and Airiel.

“Itʼs a solid LP built on a foundation of well presented songs.”
– I Die:You Die

“…fans of early Tears for Fears and Peter Murphy’s Deep should love its moody
grooves, dark romanticism, and chilly synths.”
– Chicago Reader

“…a sound that while reminiscent of The Mission, inexplicably transcends genre with it’s opulent fervor.”
– Post-Punkdotcom

FIRES

Thirteen years. The time between beginning and an ending, and the return to the familiar ground of first pages being turned.

This is the ethos behind FIRES, new project from Eric Sochocki (Cryogen Second, Becoming The Devourer), which sees a return to his dance roots. However, this return is not to familiar territory, as FIRES does not opt for political warnings entrenched in post-apocalyptic imagery, as seen in Cryogen Second, or towards the esoteric and ephemeral, like Becoming the Devourer. Instead, FIRES is a direct reach inward and expressed in pop melodies, electronic rock, and nods to the retro-futurism of Synthwave.

FIRES began in August of 2016 and the first single (Counting Walls) was released in October of 2016, and quickly began circulating throughout the US industrial scene. A second single (To Be All Alone) was released a few weeks after. In early 2017, the band signed to Metropolis Records to release FIRES’ debut album, Red Goes Grey, in September of the same year. This album can trace its musical lineage directly to industrial acts like Imperative Reaction, Aesthetic Perfection, and Alter Der Ruine, while taking pieces from modern Synthwave producers like Carpenter Brut, S U R V I V E, and Vogel.

a place both wonderful and strange

The sound of a place both wonderful and strange is that of a heady paganistic fever dream that keeps the waking world slightly at bay, a warm and heavy hand across your eyes. It is the sound of sleep paralysis, a darkness shaking and ravaging your psyche with unease, mystery and wonder. However, it’s not just about what you can hear. Often, if you’re hearing it, it’s too late.

a place both wonderful and strange exists in a world hyper-influenced by the occult, David Lynch and Janet Jackson, damaged by witch house and pop culture in equal measures.

Birthed of night and fire, Brooklyn-based Russ Marshalek’s brain child of smeary electronics and sharpened emotions takes on its newest form, as an electronic trio of power (NOT “power electronics”). Augmenting the line-up in a Voltron-esque way are Shanda Woods, formerly of We Are The Wilderness and now solo under the guise of OKTI as a member of the Hathor Collective, and Laura Hajek, who also performs as indie-pop terrorist Edith Pop.

In 2016 a place both wonderful and strange released their second album, The Laura Palmer Deviations. “The Laura Palmer Deviations” is the soundtrack to their critically-acclaimed Lynch Foundation performance “Keys Open Doors: The Hidden Life of Laura Palmer”, which recently played in Atlanta to mass praise. Their 3rd album, “What I Speak I Create”, is out in 2017 on Sony Music/The Orchard.

Combining to create a magick concoction of sounds, videos, DJ mixes and live performances that have bewitched the imagination in unique weird ways, a friend has described their style as “making music with teeth”. They have played extensively in New York City at music venues and art establishments up and down the east coast, notably capturing the interest of the David Lynch Foundation. Currently they are working on several film soundtrack collaborations and New Jack Witch, a surreal full-length concept album and short film (the title track from which was debuted on Mishka in November of 2014).

As a place both wonderful and strange’s musical identity whispers to a mystery befitting the name. The whispers grow louder until they are a scream meant to wake one from their fevered dream. Watch and listen, but don’t wake up.

Ego Likeness

Source: www.egolikeness.com

Ego Likeness was created in 1999 by artist Steven Archer, a DC native, and writer Donna Lynch in Baltimore, Maryland. Taking their name from Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel Dune, the band began as an experimental/ dark trip hop project. Throughout the course of four full length albums and several EPs, Ego Likeness have explored numerous styles from darkwave to trip-hop to rock.

Ego Likeness signed with Metropolis Records in 2010 to release their fourth album, Breedless. The album showcases their dark electronic trip hop sensibilities overlaid with Donna’s passionately emotive vocals. While many may compare them to Curve and Collide, Ego Likeness continues to take their music to darker corners of the human psyche.

In addition to touring extensively with The Cruxshadows, Voltaire, Ayria, Angelspit, The Ludovico Technique, Ego Likeness has had the honor of sharing the stage with The Damned, Peter Murphy, Chris Connelly, Collide, Razed in Black, Bella Morte, Das Ich, Rasputina, Iris, Decoded Feedback, The Azoic, More Machine Than Man, In Strict Confidence, Combichrist, Stromkern, New Model Army, And One, Seabound, Attrition, Assemblage 23, Nitzer Ebb, Aesthetic Perfection, Terrorfakt, The Gothsicles, and many others.

Ego Likeness has performed at festivals throughout the US and in Europe, including Dragon*Con (Atlanta GA), Convergence 11 (San Diego CA), Dracula’s Ball (Philadelphia PA), Ring Con (Fulda, Germany), Balticon (Baltimore MD), Black Sun Festival I (New Haven CT), Freaks United (DC), Eccentrik Festival (Raleigh NC), Reverence (Madison WI), Wicked Faire (Somerset NJ), WTII Mini-Fest (Chicago IL), several Electronic Saviors Benefit shows, and others.

Steven Archer is a multifaceted musician, artist, and writer.  He is best known for his work with the electronic rock band Ego Likeness (Metropolis Records) as well has is abstract electronica project ::Hopeful Machines::.  His music has been used in several feature sound tracks including the recent award winning documentary Small Small Thing. He has also been commissioned to score a video for NASA on the upcoming OSIRIS-REx mission.

Stoneburner is his vision of the music and philosophy of Frank Herbert’s “Dune” book series. It fuses traditional organic instruments and vocals from all over the world with modern electronic dance music in an attempt to tap into the books technological-tribal aesthetic. His hope is that the project will do justice to the novel’s vision of Arrakis and it’s warrior inhabitants.

Live shows are intense and fluid, consisting of multimedia video projections and often incorporate tribal fusion belly dance troupes.

He has written and illustrated several books available on Amazon.com as well as freelance art for several publishers including Weird Tales magazine. His artwork and jewelry can be purchased from the Ego Likeness etsy store.
